Background

The Peace & Reconciliation Study Tour offers educators a hands-on experience with the history of WWII in Asia, by visiting historical sites, museums and meeting with experts, educators, curators and survivors. Destinations included locations in China, South Korea, and will include Hong Kong this year. In the future, we hope to include sites in Japan and other Asian countries.

In 2004, the first Peace & Reconciliation Tours for Canadian educators was organized. Since then, over 7 tours, 180 educators were selected to join the Study Tours to Shanghai, Beijing, Nanjing, and Harbin, China as well as Seoul, South Korea. These educators came from across Canada, the United States, Japan, Germany and Australia to meet with scholars, historians, activists and, most importantly, the survivors of the atrocities. During this emotional journey, the participants completed intensive study sessions with experts, listened to survivor testimonies, and shared insightful discussions.

Tour Objectives

  1. To enhance educators’ knowledge and understanding of the history of WWII in Asia, from the perspectives of historical facts, education about humanity and social justice, through visits to museums, historical sites, meetings with survivors, and dialogues with local historians, scholars, teachers and peace activists in China, Korea and Hong Kong.

  2. To equip participants with the knowledge and tools required to make a professional contribution by sharing study tour observations and experiences with students, colleagues and communities in the context of WWII atrocities in Asia.
  3. To provide a valuable opportunity for participants to immerse in the history and cultures of East Asia through sight-seeing, attending cultural shows and programs in China, Korea and Hong Kong.
